Microscopic Origin of the Extension of Electrochemistry Window at Pt|Ionic Liquid Interfaces

Cathodic and anodic stability is a key issue for the design and construction of electrochemical- and electronic-devices of ionic liquids. In this study, we have successfully applied IR-vis sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (IV-SFG) to elucidate microscopic origin of the stability enhancement mechanisms of electrochemistry windows for ionic liquid based electrolytes with additives of i) Li+ and ii) zwitterionic liquid [Bimps] (1-butylimidazolium-3-(n-propanesulphonate)). In either case, IV-SFG spectra confirms that cathodically and/or anodically stable species are selectively adsorbed onto electrode to inhibit reduction and oxidation of constituent molecules.
