Medical Physics
Dr. Jürgen LAST（Integrated Cancer Center of the Montérégie Region）
Medical physics is an applied science that is concerned with the application of modern physics to medicine, mainly but not exclusively in the application of ionizing radiation to diagnosis and treatment of human disease. It is strongly integrated with engineering, biology, and chemistry and information technology.
In the introduction I will briefly talk about the historical background of medical physics and give an overview of the national and international organizations that advance and regulate the medical physics education, practice and profession.
Medical physicists customarily concentrate on one of four subspecialties that are either concerned with diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation protection or radiotherapy. I will outline the basic principles and technologies of each of these fields. Since ionizing radiation plays an integral role in all of these subspecialties a chapter is devoted to the metrology of radiation and the concept of dose.
