Insights on the Search of Molecular and Supramolecular Chirality by Modern Chiroptical Methods

The phenomena of molecular and supramolecular chirality are manifested throughout the whole natural world. They continue to draw an increasing multidisciplinary interest in chemistry, physics, biology, material sciences and other related new emerging fields of science and technology. Importantly, the optical activity (OA) represents a characteristic property of all chiral systems. Therefore it is not surprising that the various chiroptical techniques and methodologies, such as electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and vibrational optical activity (VOA) that sensitively probe chiral systems are also receiving a great attention. It’s worth to mention as well that, due to the current progress in technological development and tremendous advance of theoretical methods for predicting the chiroptical properties, the structural analysis of even rather complex chiral system has become possible . In the lecture after a brief introduction we will discuss two very recent collaborative studies: first, the structural analysis of novel chiral stable dithia-bridged hetero helicene, whose neutral form upon reversible one electron oxidation affords a stable radical–cation with attractive electronic characteristics, and second, a complexation of chiral bisporphyrin host with achiral aliphatic diamines which, depending on steric demands of achiral diamine guests, surprisingly proceeds either by induction of two step inversion of chirality or by retention of chirality of the free chiral host4. The critical role of conformational factors will be discussed.
