Properties of Sodium-Based Ionic Liquid Electrolytes for Sodium Secondary Battery Applications
Dr. Siti Aminah Mohd Noor(Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, Senior Lecturer)
The enormous demands on available global lithium resources have raised concerns about the sustainability of the supply of lithium. Sodium-based batteries have emerged as promising alternatives to Li-based batteries for the development of safe, low-cost and high energy density energy storage, due to the greater abundance of Na and likely reduction in raw material costs. We describe here NaTFSI and NaFSI electrolyte systems based on C4mpyrTFSI and C3mpyrFSI ionic liquids respectively in both liquid and gel electrolytes. The electrochemical stability of the system was examined; a pair of facile cathodic and anodic processes around 0 V vs Na/Na+ were observed in cyclic voltammetry measurements and interpreted as deposition and dissolution of sodium metal. Stable deposition and stripping currents with low overpotentials can be observed up to 250 uA cm-2 current density. Therefore, sodium electrolytes appear to be a promising for secondary sodium battery applications.
