"The Neandertals: An Extinct European Population"
Prof. Silvana Condemi (CNRS, France)
Who are the Neandertals? Where and when did they live? What caused their disappearance? These are questions we intend to answer during this colloquium in examining this extinct Middle Pleistocene population that evolved on the European continent and had only limited contact with other human populations from Africa and Asia. On the basis of teeth and bones recovered during excavation, we will investigate the possibility of reconstructing the physical aspect, the evolution, behavior and way of life of the Neandertal population. At the conclusion of the colloquium we will examine hypotheses concerning their demise and the role that our species, Homo sapiens, played in their disappearance.
