"Charged Particle Impact Ionization of Atoms and Molecules"

The ionization of atoms and molecules by charged particle impact is one of the fundamental and most interesting processes in atomic and molecular Physics. The kinematically complete studies of electron impact single ionization, called (e, 2e) processes, were initiated nearly forty years ago. Detailed understanding of low-energy electron collisions is important in many areas, such as understanding the processes in the earth’s upper atmosphere, in the development of new lasers and novel forms of lighting, as well as in the treatment of cancers that use radiotherapy. The (e, 2e) processes, has become a powerful tool to investigate the dynamics of the ionization process. We present calculations of triple differential cross section (TDCS) results for the electron impact single ionization of xenon atoms, hydrogen and water molecules in low and intermediate energy ranges and discuss the process contributing to structure seen in the differential cross section. The calculation are preformed within the modified distorted wave Born approximation formalism including the second order Born (SBA) amplitude.
